Two-Disc Anniversary Edition of Pantera’s Metal Milestone Includes Newly Remastered Version Of Original Album, Plus A Live Performance From The 1994 Monsters of Rock Festival Available From Rhino On March 25, 2014 LOS ANGELES – Pantera reached a major milestone in 1994 when the legendary metal band’s seventh studio album, Far Beyond Driven, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, becoming the fastest-selling album of the group’s career and its second consecutive platinum release. Not only a commercial success, the album also earned positive reviews around the world for the beautiful brutality of its all-out sonic assault.

FAR BEYOND DRIVEN: 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available on March 25 for a suggested list price of $18.98. A digital version will also be available. Following the breakthrough success of 1992's Vulgar Display of Power – which has since been certified double platinum – singer Philip Anselmo. Video of Pantera performing live during this era is extremely rare, making the DVD one of the few ways to see them in their prime. VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER (DELUXE EDITION) Track Listing CD “Mouth For War” “A New Level” “Walk” “Fucking Hostile” “This Love” “Rise” “No Good (Attack The Radical)” “Live In A Hole”.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of that landmark album and Rhino is celebrating with a special two-disc version that includes a newly remastered version of the album, along with a live performance from the 1994 Monsters of Rock Festival. FAR BEYOND DRIVEN: 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available on March 25 for a suggested list price of $18.98.

A digital version will also be available. Following the breakthrough success of 1992’s Vulgar Display of Power – which has since been certified double platinum – singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist Dimebag Darrell, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul returned in March 1994 with Far Beyond Driven. Following its #1 debut, FAR BEYOND DRIVEN remained on the Billboard album chart for seven more months and many still regard it as the heaviest album to ever top the chart. Its 12 tracks represented a continuation of the previous album’s relentless musical onslaught with hard-hitting tracks like the first single “I’m Broken” as well as the mosh-pit classics “5 Minutes Alone” and “Slaughtered.” Another standout track was the group’s swirling acoustic cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” which became a live favorite when Pantera hit the road to support the album later that year.

Fans already familiar with FAR BEYOND DRIVEN are in for a treat with the second disc of the 20th Anniversary Edition. Dubbed FAR BEYOND BOOTLEG – LIVE FROM DONINGTON ’94, the disc contains Pantera full live set recorded at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Donington, England on June 4, 1994. The 40-minute show comprises nine tracks taken from the band’s three most recent albums including: “Use My Third Arm” and “Strength Beyond Strength” from Far Beyond Driven, “Walk,” “Mouth For War,” and “This Love” off of Vulgar Display of Power, plus the title track from Cowboys from Hell as well as the live staple melding “Domination” and “Hollow.” FAR BEYOND DRIVEN: 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Track Listing Disc One – Original Album Remastered 1.

“Mouth For War” 9. “Cowboys From Hell”. By Enrique Lopetegui Phil Anselmo has survived it all—Pantera’s success and tragedy, the bitter ending of Superjoint Ritual, drug abuse and back and knee surgery. Now, he’s a practical man. “I just felt inspired,” he told the Current from his home in New Orleans, explaining why he decided to embark on his first-ever solo tour behind 2013’s Walk Through Exits Only, the album he released as Phillip H. Anselmo & The Illegals.

“If I feel inspired, I’m going to act on it. So I felt inspired, I did a record, and now we play shows. Nothing too scientific there.” Neither pure death or black metal, Walk Through Exits Only is Anselmo’s straightforward attempt to disassociate himself from the average metal band out there. “I sing about real things that happen to me and I carry no fucking invisible ideology around on my shoulders at all,” he said. “I see a million bands copying black metal over and over, and even some death bands do the same thing to some degree, so I wanted to do something different.

I didn’t want to record speed for the sake of speed or double-kick for the sake of fucking double-kick.”. By Lauren Wise Here are some excerpts from the interview: Lauren: So tell me how everything went with the Housecore Horror Film Festival. PHA: In my opinion it was a blast, man. It was surprisingly well set-up, all the bands were great I had a blast. It was moving at times, even.

You know, EyeHateGod were incredible, the Melvins were incredible, and of course, Goblin was off the charts, man, they just their individual set was amazing. Lauren: Even though The Purple EP was just released in 2012, it seems like so much has happened since with Down and also your own musical ventures. How will this album compare to the last Down record? PHA: Well Down is Down, and the music we make isn’t rocket science. You put us in the same room together, man; with Pepper and Jimmy, especially, you’re going to get Down.

But what I have caught on this record–it’s kind of ridiculous to say–but the vibe I catch is a heavy heavy dose of Black Sabbath, almost like Technical Ecstasy Sabbath’s seventh album. Or something like that. A little more obscure Black Sabbath. And also Witchfinder General. It’s a little ridiculous, because we did start the band because of our Black Sabbath-worship, and same with Witchfinder General.

It influenced the hell out of us. But that’s what I take away from this record. It’s going really back to our roots. Lauren: I wanted to ask about Witchfinder General, and also about the new blood in the band, Bobby Landgraf, and how the transition from Kirk to Bobby has been inspirational for you. PHA: Bobby’s great. He came right in and contributed right away.

He knows the drill; he’s been with us whether it was guitar teching or stage managing for like 18 years, he knows. He’s very well-versed and his style of music coincides with us to a certain degree, playing the blues. And he’s an incredible guitar player. And when you talk about infusing new stuff, heck man, even Pat Bruders, the bass player wrote a lot of killer stuff on this new record.

Power

I can’t say enough about how we pushed it–especially me for sure, vocally–but we pushed it toward that Witchfinder General feel. A lot of people would pick Witchfinder’s first record, Requiem.oh no, Jesus Christ I’m still talking about the second album. God, I’m stupid. Fucking the Friends From Hell 1983 record for me really grabbed, because when I was a kid it felt like a Black Sabbath record that Sabbath never did, in my young mind. Lauren: Obviously playing Pantera songs brings you back to an emotional, very powerful place. PHA: Especially this time of year It doesn’t get any easier. Realizing that you know it’s impossible to happen again.

But you know, I guess that’s why the spirit of doing the Metal Masters, part five now big sigh. It’s fulfilling to a certain degree, and it does get emotional. But when you’re on stage it feels natural.

At the end of the day, it’s fun and I accept it. And I love the guys for it. Lauren: What three albums would you take to a deserted island? You have to go there? Lauren: I have to sometimes. PHA: That’s a roughie. All right. This could be interchangeable within every 15 minutes.

I’d take the Beatles Abbey Road Slayer Hell Awaits. And Portal’s Outre.

By Eddie Jorgensen Special to The Bee Anselmo, a New Orleans native who also fronts the metal band Down (featuring former members of Corrosion Of Conformity and Eyehategod), said he’s looking forward to this new tour, which will offer him a chance to play more intimate venues and get up close and personal with audiences. But some of those venues will have to seem like fly speck compared with the stadiums of Pantera’s heyday. “Look, I’m a realist here and I understand we’re playing rather early in the year,” Anselmo said. “It’s just about about getting the Illegals in small clubs and putting in the dirty work.” The Illegal’s debut album, “Walk Through Exits Only,” came out last July and received strong notices from metal ’zines around the globe for its unbridled ferocity and over-the-top guitars. The album doesn’t stray far from Anselmo’s previous sound. Marzi Montazeri plays guitars, Joey Gonzalez lays down the beats, Stephen Taylor holds down the bass duties and, of course, Anselmo provides his trademark scream-growl vocals. “Dimebag introduced me to Marzi (who) was one of the first guitarists I ever saw him give props to,” Anselmo said.

“We met and developed a great friendship over the years. This band is a project that has been a long time coming, and we couldn’t be happier playing together.” Creativity and productivity have been a top priority for the Illegals, Anselmo said.

“Every time we get together, we always put aside a little time to write some new stuff,” he added. “It’s valuable and always a good thing to go over stuff we already know, but the creative part of being in a band is where it’s at.”. By Jason Simms On “Walk Through Exits Only,” former Pantera vocalist Philip Anselmo wanted to do something different. In fact, much of the debut full length from Philip H. Anselmo & the Illegals is about frustration with stagnation and shaking things up. The title track begins, “It’s ruined / Everybody ruins music / Not just me.” Anselmo screams about how tired he is of imitation, yet has no illusions about how hard it is to innovate.

“A comeback doesn’t come gently,” the song continues, “it’s as ugly, as ugly is.” Anselmo brings some of the most abrasive vocals of his career to this new material. There’s a spoken feel to his shouting, almost like someone in a heated argument.

It’s less melodic than Down, the band Anselmo spent most of the last decade fronting. It’s also less stylized than his work on Pantera albums like “Vulgar Display of Power,” that for better or worse, heavily influenced the nu metal sound that dominated late ’90s rock radio. Anselmo says that what he’s doing now is a challenging, “physically demanding style where you’re throwing your entire body into it, and it really does rattle my decrepit skeleton.” Paradoxically, he says, this singing style comes a lot more naturally to him. “Down requires me to be in voice, which is rare, and also in key, which is even rarer. So I really enjoy doing stuff with the Illegals because I can be as raw as possible and not have to worry about being in key.”. By Nathan Smith In the wacky world of heavy metal, there ain’t a whole lot that Philip Anselmo hasn’t seen, heard and done. In addition to helping change the sound of mainstream metal as frontman for Pantera, the outspoken singer has toured the planet with sludgy supergroup Down, released records with a slew of side projects and even started his own label, Housecore Records, to help shepherd the careers of up-and-coming bands like haarp and Warbeast.

The only thing he hadn’t done, until recently, was perhaps the most obvious move of all for a stone-cold, certified metal god: put out a solo album. He accomplished that feat last year with the help of a new backing band, the Illegals. Far from the slick, over-produced moneymaker that many of his rock star peers gone solo have opted to record over the years, Philip H. Anselmo and the Illegals’ Walk Through Exits Only is a brooding, introspective and challenging record — not to mention brutally heavy. Louis fans will get their first taste of the new material live on Monday when the band bangs into Pop’s Nightclub in Sauget.

Anselmo could easily pack a much larger venue with Down, and surely he isn’t doing this tour for the money, so why bother stepping down to the smaller stage? “I like the small stages,” says Anselmo in that deep, crackling voice that has always seemed to belong to a man hundreds of pounds heavier. “Matter of fact, on this particular run, that’s what I begged for. I said, ‘Let’s play some very small, intimate places,’ because it’s just a different experience, and it’s really something I enjoy.
