Ffmpegx requires that you download and install some freeware mpeg2 encoders (but it looks like those might not help you with playback. The note about mpeg2 on that site says you need either the apple one or vlc to playback mpeg2 / muxed files. I didn't realize that streamclip.
I've seen this too. Not in all, but some FCP systems. Even FCS 2 systems. I have two MacPros both still FCS 2. In one, I can open MPEG-2/VOBs with MPEGStreamclip, in the other, I can't.
In the one I can, the entire OS and FCS was freshly installed recently. In the one that I can't and which shows this warning, the system has been upgraded over the original. The one with the 'DVD-capable' MPEG Streamclip is a MacPro Quad-core OSX 10.5.6, QT 7.6.2 The one with the 'DVD-impaired' MPEG Streamclip is a MacPro 8-core OSX 10.5.7, QT 7.6.2 So there's possibly one combination of OS and QT updates or the order of installing a QT version before/after FCS that breaks MPEG Streamclip's ability to open MPEG-2.
Neil Sadwelkar neilsadwelkar.blogspot.com twitter: fcpguru FCP Editor, Edit systems consultant Mumbai India. Hi Neil, Thanks for the response. When I go to About this Mac Software, I see Quicktime player v10 and Quicktime player v7.6.3, but no mentiton of 'Pro' - when I do a software update, all is up to date. I am running snow leopard. SQUARED5 makers of mpegstreamclip say this on their site requirements for mpeg2: For MPEG-2 playback and conversion, you need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component.
You can buy it from Apple (If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don't have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple. If you bought an older version of the component, you can update it to the latest version (Note that the MPEG-2 component is neither required nor useful for MPEG-1 or MPEG-4 files. But it is required for VOB files and transport streams, because they are MPEG-2 files. But that page does not offer to update! I wonder if I should uninstall QT then reinstall it? Hi Steve Thanks for the reply, I just followed that link, and it explains how to install Optional Instals from the Snow Leopard disk.
Which I did, and it makes no difference. Strangely, after installing this Quicktime off the Snow Leopard disk, it says I should go to some Apple site to update my software, and links to a page with a 10.5.8 Leopard download!!!??? Absolutely weird and a bit shambolic IMO. Im busy with a huge upload, once that is done I will remove QT and reinstall, see if that fixes anything.
I had the same problem after I upgraded to Snow Leopard - when trying to open a vob in mpeg-streamclip, a message would tell me that the mpeg-2 playback component was missing. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard (no need to install Leopard before), reinstalled FCS 2 and all my programs, what a pain, and now everything works again. Don't forget to check the 'Install QuickTime 7' when installing Snow Leopard. (By the way, I can't see the mpeg-2 playback component in the Library, and it wasn't there neither in Tiger nor in Leopard, what is the exact name and location?
Just in case things go wrong again. I don't feel like starting the whole reinstall process again). Dejan, The QuickTimeMPEG2.component gets installed in the following location: /System/Library/QuickTime (not to be confused with /Library/QuickTime or /Library/QuickTime) To check your re-installation, just open up the System folder in the root of your hard drive and navigate to the QuickTime folder in the Library folder in there. Be pretty cautious with things in this folder-don't move anything around without knowing its exact consequences.

That said, I'm debating moving this codec, and other non-standard codecs to either my main user library at /Library/QuickTime, or all users /Library/QuickTime. That way, when I do another total system upgrade in the future, this won't be an issue. Hi guys, I spoke to Apple UK on Saturday and the support guy confirmed this component has to be purchases separately. But just a second, didnt I buy that codec/component when I bought FCS2? It seemed to be included with the Suite then, and now it seems to have been taken away and they want us to buy something we already paid for??? Surely this cannot be the case. It would be tantemount to Apple stealing from it's customers!

In any case, I got the 'component' from my laptop which somehow still works. If anyone wants help, email me privately. I have a similar problem (the same as Mark), I recently did a clean install of my system and deleted my Previous Systems folder. I was looking to extract and convert DVD info to QuickTime with the Mpeg-2 Component using the MPEG stream clip and I got the same message as Mark. I already checked in/Library/QuickTime and I have the QuickTimeMPEG2.component version 6.3 and in the system/library/quicktime I have theQuickTimeMPEG2.component 7.6.

I deleted the MPEG 2 component 6.3 and reinstall the MPEG2 7.6 from the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg, and the Installer says 'successfully installed' but there's no sign of the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file in the /Library/QuickTime. And still no ability to play MPEG-2.
So I don't know what to do My system is 10.4.11 and I have the Quicktime pro 7.6.4, and final cut pro HD 5.
